چکیده

In this paper we develop and test a hybrid multiscale method for coupling atomistic and continuum simulations. Our goal is to bridge the gap on both the time and space scales between the microscopic (atomistic) and macroscopic (continuum) models. A macroscale solver for diffusion equation, here the finite difference scheme, is used on a coarse grid, while Monte Carlo simulation for random walks of particles serves as the microscopic model and is used to supply the necessary data, e.g., the macroscale fluxes or the boundary condition, for the macroscopic model. Our approach depends strongly on the efficient and stable coupling between the microscale and macroscale solvers. Numerical results and error analysis for several examples demonstrate the efficacy of our method.

Discussion of recent developments in hybrid atomistic-continuum methods for multiscale hydrodynamics

We discuss recent progress in hybrid atomistic-continuum methods with particular emphasis on developments in boundary condition imposition in molecular simulations, an essential ingredient of hybrid methods. Both Dirichlet (state variable) and flux boundary conditions are discussed. We also briefly review various coupling approaches and discuss the effects of compressibility and molecular fluct...

Hybrid atomistic-continuum methods for multiscale hydrodynamics

We discuss hybrid atomistic-continuum methods for multiscale hydrodynamic applications. Both dense fluid and dilute gas formulations are considered. The choice of coupling method and its relation to the fluid physics is discussed. The differences in hybrid methods resulting from underlying compressible and incompressible continuum formulations as well as the importance of timescale decoupling a...

Connecting Atomistic-to-Continuum Coupling and Domain Decomposition

Many atomistic/continuum coupling algorithms utilize an overlapping subdomain method, where boundary data for local solves in atomistic and discretized continuum subdomains is provided from local solves in neighboring subdomains. Such coupling algorithms are closely related to the classical alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method, although little to no convergence or error analysis exis...

Consistent Energy-Based Atomistic/Continuum Coupling for Two-Body Potentials in One and Two Dimensions

This paper addresses the problem of consistent energy-based coupling of atomistic and continuum models of materials, limited to zero-temperature statics of simple crystals. It has been widely recognized that the most practical coupled methods exhibit large errors on the atomistic/continuum interface (which are often attributed to spurious forces called “ghost forces”). There are only few existi...

A multiscale coupling method for the modeling of dynamics of solids with application to brittle cracks

We present a multiscale model for numerical simulations of dynamics of crystalline solids. The method combines the continuum nonlinear elasto-dynamics model, which models the stress waves and physical loading conditions, and molecular dynamics model, which provides the nonlinear constitutive relation and resolves the atomic structures near local defects. The coupling of the two models is achiev...
